Description
What is Leaky Gut? Leaky Gut is an expression that means that the lining of the intestines becomes damaged, inflamed or irritated, which can allow small particles such as undigested food, bacteria and other substances to penetrate the mucosa and enter the blood. Since these particles should not be there in the first place, our immune system believes that it is being attacked and responds by attacking various tissues in the body. This can lead to various diseases, ranging from thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism / hyperthyroidism), to psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, allergies, IBS, fatigue and other autoimmune diseases. A leaky gut can, if left untreated, lead to a range of symptoms such as food intolerances, stomach issues, fatigue, brain fog, weakened immune system, skin problems, joint problems, depression and much more. Since it can be difficult for the average person to know if you have a leaky gut or not, you can have this issue for a long time before understanding that it can be the cause behind a number of different health problems. Testing for leaky gut is thus extremely important in several different diseases and ailments. Studies show that the levels of zonulin have been elevated for a long period of time in those who have developed diseases such as allergies, celiac disease, autoimmune diseases, multiple sclerosis and rheumatism. Zonulin is a marker for leaky gut and of great value to review if you have different symptoms and want to optimise your health. What is zonulin? Zonulin is a protein, synthesised in intestinal and liver cells, that reversibly regulates intestinal permeability. Zonulin modulates the permeability of so-called tight junctions between cells of the wall of the digestive tract and its role is to allow nutrients and molecules to pass into the bloodstream. If these tight junctions get damaged by zonulin, larger protein molecules that would not normally be allowed to pass through can pass and create inflammation in the body. Who would benefit from the Leaky Gut Test? This test measures zonulin, which is a marker for leaky gut. If you experience more gut issues, we can recommend our more comprehensive gut health test, Gut Microbiome XL , which also measures the status of your gut flora, i.e. bacteria and fungal overgrowth (incl. Candida) and a number of different digestive functions. How does the Leaky Gut Test work? All our health tests including our stool tests are done from home. Everything you need to perform the test is in the test kit. The test is then sent to our ISO certified lab for analysis and you will receive your result digitally.
